Re: Using Creative Commons artwork in GPL application

   according to the FSF, the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike
   license is not compatible with the GPL. This license is used for
   many icon sets such as that of the Tango project. Can such icons be
   used in a GPL application, or does the GPL linking clauses demand
   that artwork as well as libraries be distributed under the GPL?

The GNU GPL doesn't have a `linking clause'.  I belive the following
section is relevant to you:

  2. You may modify your copy or copies of the Program or any portion
     of it, thus forming a work based on the Program, and copy and
     distribute such modifications or work under the terms of Section
     1 above, provided that you also meet all of these conditions:

...

       b. You must cause any work that you distribute or publish, that
          in whole or in part contains or is derived from the Program
          or any part thereof, to be licensed as a whole at no charge
          to all third parties under the terms of this License.

In other words, if the icons are part of the Program, then the icons
must be licensed under the terms of the GNU GPL.
