   I use vim on some systems, nvi on others; the latter is a direct
   descendant of the original vi.

nvi is not in anyway a direct descendant of vi, it shares nothing with
it other than how it behaves, much like vim.  nvi is a complete
reimplementation of vi since vi was (and maybe still is) non-free
software at the time.  nvi was in turn based on elvis, which was a
free clone of vi.
