Because the operating system being used is the GNU operating system,
with Linux as its kernel.

   What about GNU/BSD where you run the GNU stuff with a BSD kernel?

There is a GNU/kFreeBSD system out ther (k for kernel, BSD is after
all a operating system, like GNU).

   Also, what's the rub on "GNU/Hurd" when the Hurd kernel *is* GNU?
   It should just be "GNU"!
