They did not invent it.  It was standard before the beancounters
discovered that messing with access to programs they had no clue about
could make them money.

The free software movement was a countermovement.

Thompson/Richie developed and distributed Unix without commercial
interest.  The beancounters later pulled Unix under their control.

That is part of the reason that programmers nowadays are somewhat better
educated to watch what work they are contributing to their company and
under what conditions.
