                      Eclipse, from the Linux perspective

 Eclipse, a software development environment and an extensible plug-in
 platform, is closer to the Linux community than many Linux enthusiasts may
 think.  Eclipse has a vibrant community of contributors of plug-ins and
 patches.  Eclipse is governed by the Eclipse Foundation, a not-for-profit
 corporation (even though it was born in a corporation, IBM.) Each Eclipse
 installation comes with all the source code, supporting Linux enthusiasts'
 practice of hacking-code-to-make-people's-lives-easier.  Started a couple
 of years ago, the Eclipse Linux Tools project provides better support for
 Linux developers, including integration with native development tools such
 as GNU Autotools and best practices for packaging.  This project has also
 helped several Linux distributions with packaging of Eclipse itself. 
 Eclipse's license is relatively friendly, further promoting the submission
 of contributions.  

 In this talk, Annie will explore these synergies of Eclipse and Linux.  She
 will then dive into Eclipse hacking, both for customizing Eclipse for
 yourself or your organization, and for contributing patches and plug-ins
 back to the community.

 About Annie Ying:
 Annie Ying's professional life has been revolving around Eclipse for ten
 years, first as an intern at Eclipse's place of birth.  After finishing a
 Master's degree in Computer Science in 2003, she had worked for IBM Watson
 Research Center for five years, building various programming tools on
 Eclipse.  Currently, she is inventing the next generation programming tools
 as a PhD student in Computer Science at McGill University in Canada.

 Meeting Location:
   Please note that this meeting will be held at IBM, 590 Madison Ave,
   12th floor, corner of 57th Street, and not at Google.  This is
   the building with the IBM logo on the front of the building.

 Coding Workshops/Hacking Society:
   This is a group of people that wants to learn about and work on coding
   in Python, Smalltalk, Ruby, C++, and other languages, and hack on code.
   There will also be help given for those who wish to install Linux for the
   first time.
   Sometimes they go out to eat afterward.

   Bring something to show off and discuss!

   The workshops meet every other Tuesday, at the NY Public Library,
   Hudson Park Branch.  66 Leroy St. NY NY from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
