Host Open Forum Discussion on the New Copyright Alert System
*Internet Society and its New York Chapter to Host Open Forum Discussion
on the New Copyright Alert System*
INET New York will initiate a discussion on the new Copyright Alert
System (CAS) aimed at warning Internet users about illegally downloaded
content
[Washington, D.C. and Geneva, Switzerland â 09 November 2012] â The
Internet Society, in collaboration with its New York Chapter, will host
a half-day discussion forum on November 15, which will address the
Center for Copyright Information's (CCI) new Copyright Alert System
(CAS). The INET New York, held at the New York Law School, will feature
two panel discussions and will conclude with a wrap-up multi-stakeholder
session. The event will seek to provide information and exchange ideas
regarding the operation of CAS, its strengths, weaknesses, and the
challenges that lie ahead.
The CAS, designed to provide warnings to Internet users who illegally
download copyrighted content over peer-to-peer file sharing networks,
was formed as a collaborative effort between U.S. content creators and
five leading Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Internet users will
receive a graduated set of six warnings from their ISP, if the
downloading persists.
The CCI mechanism, based on self-regulation paradigms, has an underlying
rationale similar to other initiatives and copyright policy responses
around the world. The Internet Society, bringing together for the first
time several representatives and members of the CCI along with a broad
range of industry organizations and public interest advocates, hopes to
initiate a robust dialogue regarding the effectiveness of this new
mechanism.
Panel Discussion #1: Overview of the CCI and the CAS
* Moderator: Declan McCullagh, Chief Political Correspondent, CNET
* Link Hoewing, Vice President, Internet and Technology Policy, Verizon
* Fernando Laguarda, Vice President, External Affairs and Policy
Counselor, Time Warner Cable
* Jill Lesser, Executive Director, Center for Copyright Information
* Victoria Sheckler, SVP and Deputy General Counsel, Recording Industry
Association of America
* Ben Sheffner, Vice President of Legal Affairs, Motion Picture
Association of America
* Ronald Wheeler, SVP Content Protection, Fox Entertainment Group
Panel Discussion #2: The Public Interest and Academic Viewpoint on the
CCI and CAS
* Moderator: Jeff Jarvis, Associate Professor and Director of the
Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism at the City University
of New Yorkâs Graduate School of Journalism
* Konstantinos Komaitis, Policy Advisor, Internet Society
* Molly Land, Associate Professor of Law at New York Law School
* Aram Sinnreich, Assistant Professor, Rutgers Universityâs School of
Communication and Information
* Gigi Sohn, President and CEO, Public Knowledge
* David Sohn, General Counsel, Center for Democracy and Technology
Wrap-up Multi-stakeholder Panel:
* Moderated by Konstantinos Komaitis, Policy Advisor, Internet Society
* Participation by speakers from previous panels
"The Internet Society supports the development of a robust digital
content environment that will foster the continued growth and
development of an open, global Internet,â said Paul Brigner, Internet
Society Regional Bureau Director, North America. âThe launch of the new
Copyright Alert System has generated a great deal of discussion, and the
Internet Society and its New York Chapter felt it was important to
convene these panels to discuss this important topic. This event will
give participants the opportunity to join in the dialogue and to reflect
on the effectiveness of CAS.â
