Money (if only FSF’s money could be used for such things)
Careful study of what (free) 3D/animation(4D) then game engines are out
there, their features, API and bindings (in languages), and try to unify
interface so it’s less hard to learn and switch, so they become more
usable.
Then, (a) GUI(s) to this, because many people starts from just using GUI
and proprietary software such as gamemaker that doesn’t require to know
how to program.
Doing that with dynamical and scriptable extensibility in mind, like with
emacs, would allow that to happen while people learning the joys of
programming without even knowing they do.
