I don't have Msys installed. However, I nuked my source tree and MingW last
night, reinstalled MingW and the the source, and recompiled and it worked
just fine using the make that comes with MingW (you have to make sure you
are not getting Cygwin's make. Make -v will show among other things,
"compiled for MingW" ...

However, I discovered that even with the proper make executable, if I did a
"make" and got the error to do "make bootstrap" -- the "make bootstrap"
would then fail! However, if I did a "make clean" and then "make bootstrap"
all is well. Once the "make bootstrap" was done I was ready to install.
