Stephen, Karel,

Thank you both for your help.
It also actually occurs that when I'm trying to write into a remote file (on a UNIX machine), even though the mode is set to "-(Unix)", the letters I am writing are each written on a separate line (after writing a letter, it goes to the following line).

Do you believe this has anything to do with the DOS / UNIX mode differences?

Regards,

Alexandre.

(setq default-buffer-file-coding-system 'undecided-unix)

That will make new files be created with Unix line endings.

To convert current files, use set-buffer-file-coding-system (bound to
C-x RET f).
