Start Emacs with Emacs -Q. Type some text and move point into that text. Do

  M-x longlines-mode

and then

  M-: (insert "\n")

This will insert a space instead of "\n".

In GNU Emacs 22.1.50.1 (i386-mingw-nt5.1.2600)
 of 2007-07-04
Windowing system distributor `Microsoft Corp.', version 5.1.2600
configured using `configure --with-gcc (3.4) --cflags -Ic:/g/include'
