Not really. You may need to compile dpkg, if you want to install from
the debian packages, but the installation should mostly work as
described in the documentation, maybe with very small modifications.
If you have a particular problem and can solve it yourself, you can
always ask here (or on debian-hurd).

Yes, documentation is (always :)) needed. The Hurd Reference Manual for
example is very outdated at the moment and should be updated at least
before the next release.
