Many thanks, Neal :-)  I remember when I got that mail, read the first 2 
paragraphs, postpone the reading for another time, ...and forgot about it!

Actually I was referring to something that Mark Kettenis tried to do but 
it is possible that I just messed my memories with another annoying 
limitation of the Hurd -- the missing pthreads implementation.
