There are some issues that prevented the hurd from running on vmware,
and since vmware is not free software no one can really fix vmware.

I've run the hurd on bochs which is a free pc emulator and it works
about as well as any GNU/Linux distribution on the same. There's even
a Hurd disk image that can be used with bochs floating around on the
net.
