install problems (/dev/console missing)

Hi folks

after following the install instructions at

I untar the file

since this makes me run in circles, I wonder if anyone can tell me how to proceed...
in particular, how do I create /dev/console, as that seems to be the root cause...
it's not part of the tar file (maybe it should be?)
