The limitation is because the whole partition is mapped into the file
systems address space.  The same technique is used in ufs as is ext2fs
and hence the same limitation applies (as will the same fix).

The implementation is limited in the sense that Pietro is asking, if I
have understood his intention correctly.  The specification of the
file system, as you rightly point out, is not limited to 2GB.
