Okay I made these changes.
Now, when I boot (w/o floppy), it gets this far before locking up (the cursor stiil blinks):

Partition check (DOS partitions):
hd0: hds0s1 hd0s2
COM0: at atbus0, port = 3f8, spl = 6, pic = 4 (DOS COM1)
COM1: at atbus1, port = 2f8, spl = 6, pic = 4 (DOS COM2)

Thank you,
Kevin

Is this correct for my machine: (HD = hda1 is root and hda2 is swap)

./MAKEDEV hd0s1 hd0s2 hd2

hd0s1 is my root
hd0s2 is my swap
hd2 is my cdrom

Yes.

In the fstab, for me -- is this correct based on my configuration:

/dev/hd0s1 / extfs rw 1 1
              ^^^^^
Change that to 'ext2'.

/dev/hd2 /cdrom iso9660fs ro,noauto 0 0

That one isn't needed; use settrans instead.

/etc/fstab is only used for checking the filesystems on
Debian GNU/Hurd's boot-up, IIRC.
