I'm very confused.  What you're proposing has nothing whatsoever to do
with what's discussed in the thread you've cited, or with Derek's
proposed patch.  They were all concerned with the mechanics of passing
information to scripts, not with determining that information in the
first place, which seems to be your concern.  Allowing a user to claim
to be anyone he or she wants seems to me to be entirely contrary to the
idea of a revision control system maintaining reliable information about
who made each change.
