Running out space in /tmp

I am using the :ext: protocol and I keep running out of space on 
server:/tmp whenever I do an import.  I tried:

        cvs -T <another dir on the server> import ...
        
and:

        export TMPDIR=<another dir on the server>
        cvs import ...
        
but to no avail.

Is there a solution to this problem?  I am running CVS 1.11.1 for both 
client and server.
