Whether it's tasteful or not depends on how many binary files you've got
and how often they change (and perhaps how important they are).

I don't mind keeping the odd GIF or whatnot in my CVS repo because they
never change and having everything in one place is convenient. However
if I was a web site developer I'd probably want a separate tool for
handling such things and using a separate tool wouldn't be cumbersome in
that environment because it would often be separate people actually
making the changes to, and creating, images and it would be very easy to
have a "build system" that did the integration of images and text/html
for publishing.
