What's remembered?

I run CVS most frequently from Xemacs-PCL-CVS.
On one project I checked out a specific tag (xemacs: CVS co -r r21-5-latest-beta...).

Since then, I have been surprised to find that PCL CVS-Update finds everything up-to-date dispite being on the edge of the development line.

I know that CVS can determine the repository from the directory structure. My question is: does the program also remember the specific -r tag, or do I need to do a command-line update in order to supply that info?
