archives no help on pserver aborted

I do telnet ip 2401 and get

cvs [pserver aborted]: bad auth protocol start: foo

Connection closed by foreign host.

This is from the client, now if Im no the server I can do all the normal
cvs update/add/etc no prob.  The user Im connecting with is also the same
user on the server so it is connecting i believe.  And I can login in,
just can not do

cvs -d :pserver:address@hidden:/repository checkout repository
cvs server: cannot open /root/.cvsignore: Permission denied
cvs [server aborted]: can't chdir(/root): Permission denied

Does this have to do with group access?  Because I have made a partition
called /repository which is owned by owner cvs and group cvs.  user is
also in the group cvs on the server.  So what am I missing, I read the
archive and couldn't find an excuse that matched. :)
