.cvspass error on solaris

Hi all,

We have a couple of cvs repositories set up on RedHat linux 7.1 systems
using pserver authentication. We've been successfully using cvs on a
collection of linux, FreeBSD, and Windows clients for quite some time now.
(all this using cvs 1.11.1p1) We just installed the cvs client on a Solaris
5.8 machine, and when I try to log into one of the cvs servers I get the
following .cvspass error:

cvs -d :pserver:address@hidden:/cvs login
Logging in to :pserver:address@hidden:2401/cvs
CVS password:
cvs login: failed to open file://.cvspass for reading: No such file or
directory
cvs [login aborted]: fatal error: exiting

Why is cvs on the Solaris machine looking for //.cvspass? What do I need to
do to prevent this error? I found an older post suggesting to undefine HOME
on the server but that didn't help...

Thanks!

-Bruce
