using cvs or rcs in to manage data files from programs

Hi,

I have an app that I use that saves scripts in a C like text file. I 
wish to extend it to use somthing like CVS or RCS to manage these 
scripts within the app. So the user can save revisions and go back steps 
if needed etc. So I suppose I'm asking for an API for CVS that I can 
extend my app with. Has anyone done this? Does anyone have any pointers?
