Couple of hours? What are you running, a 16 Mhz 386?
I just ran configure and make on a fresh untar of cvs 1.11.
When it finished, the same MP3 was still playing.
Redoing it with timings, I see that ./configure step took 9.6 seconds.
The compile took 1 minute, 5 seconds.
