I completely agree.  That being said, I think it's
important to have coding standards so that future
maintenance is easier.

I once worked on a project that had been around ten
years and no matter where you looked, the coding style
was the same.  It made it much easier to read.  This
particular project enforced the coding standard
through code reviews, not through automated
beautification.
