You can change the maximum number of open files on a Linux using the
following method:

echo 8192 > /proc/sys/fs/file-max

you should also set inode-max to 3 or 4 times file-max.

echo 32768 > /proc/sys/fs/inode-max

You can make these change permanent by editing /etc/sysctl.conf (RedHat
only I believe)
