Arguably, adding years to the life of CVS is CVS-friendly enough.
There are already enough architectural compromises in the software to
make it easy to integrate with CVS.

Why should anyone do extra work to compromise some freely distributed
software in order to support people who won't actually use it? There
are some very good reasons why versioned elements are named the way
they are. It makes them very easy to recognize and filter in a stream
of text. More importantly, it helps to minimize human confusion when
dealing with two nested levels that are similar to each other. If you
actually use the program for a while, you will see. This was actually
a conscious design decision. I've been happily co-existing with that
decision since January.

Emacs Lisp is a hacked down version of a severely obsolete,
dynamically scoped dialect. So far, there is only one person who has
shown programming initiative on this project, and he's not interested
in touching Elisp with a ten foot pole.
