"Deploying"?

Hi

I wanted to know what exactly is meant by "deploying"
software. I work in a project being developed in C
(for Windows and Linux platforms) and we use CVS for
version control. Can we use CVS for deploying? If so,
how to do it? If not can anyone suggest any tools/
methods/pointers?
