Like almost every package Red Hat Linux carries, there are also a number of
post-package-release patches to CVS in Red Hat 9.0. If you care about these
changes, you should make sure the updated CVS you install has them, or refit
them yourself. Just to make things clear, here's the list (culled from the
"cvs.spec" file in the source RPM):

        cvs-1.11.2-mktemp.patch
        cvs-1.11.1p1-krb4.patch
        cvs-1.11.1p1-authserver.patch
        cvs-1.11.2-cvspass.patch
        cvs-1.11.1p1-bs.patch
        cvs-1.11.2-extzlib.patch
        cvs-1.11.2-closure.patch
        cvs-1.11.2-server-empty-message.patch
        cvs-1.11.2-client-empty-message.patch
        cvs-1.11.2-abortabort.patch
        cvs-1.11.2-emptymsg.patch
        cvs-1.11.2-netbsd-tag.patch
        cvs-e-matters.patch

The change log (slightly editted from the same file) says:

        * Thu Jan 16 2003 Nalin Dahyabhai <address@hidden> 1.11.2-8
        - incorporate fix for double-free in server (CAN-2003-0015)

        * Tue Nov 26 2002 Nalin Dahyabhai <address@hidden> 1.11.2-7
        - don't error out in %%install if the info dir file we remove from the
build
          root isn't there (depends on the version of texinfo installed,
reported by
          Arnd Bergmann)

        * Fri Oct  4 2002 Nalin Dahyabhai <address@hidden> 1.11.2-6
        - fixup LDFLAGS to find multilib Kerberos for linking

        * Thu Sep 24 2002 Nalin Dahyabhai <address@hidden>
        - incorporate patch to add 't' as a loginfo format specifier, from
NetBSD

        * Thu Jul 18 2002 Tim Waugh <address@hidden 1.11.2-5
        - Fix mktemp patch (bug #66669)
        - Incorporate patch to fix verifymsg behaviour on empty logs (bug
#66022)

        * Tue Jun  4 2002 Nalin Dahyabhai <address@hidden> 1.11.2-3
        - incorporate patch to fix incorrect socket descriptor usage (#65225)
        - incorporate patches to not choke on empty commit messages and to
always
          send them (#66017)
        - incorporate patch to not infinitely recurse on assertion failures
(#66019)

Just as an aside, this is why I love RPM. Red Hat ships a completely
unmodified copy of the CVS 1.11.2 source, and ships patches to be applied to
it. You never have to guess what's been changed.
