CVS Renames files during commit failure?

Hi,

I go to commit a group of files and it fails since the commit check script on the server fails.

However it renames some source (ie DebugServer.cpp to .new.DebugServer.cpp).  Any ideas why?

I'm running cvs 1.10 on win 2k.
