Note that Mark said "newly created".  Chmod'ing the top-level
directory doesn't fix up any preexisting directories; you'll have
to do that yourself.  See the "find" and "xargs" commands.

Are you sure you're in the right group?  If you just added
yourself (whether by "usermod", editing /etc/group, etc.), it
doesn't affect your current sessions.  You have to log out and in
again for the change to take effect.  See the "id" command (with
"-a" if your system needs it).
