By the way, there's more on CVS's client/server protocol in the
doc/cvsclient.texinfo file.  If you have a full installation of CVS and
your GNU info program is installed correctly you should be able to
access a friendly version of that document by typing `info cvsclient' at
a command prompt.  With a working but incorrectly installed GNU info and
a current CVS source distribution, something like, `info
- --directory=cvs-1.11.4/doc --file=cvsclient.info', should work too.
