Directory structure

I'm a very green CVS newbie.  What is the recommended directory
structure for a project under CVS control?  What relationship should
exist between the directory structure during development and the
directory structure of the eventually released distribution?

When I code, usually the main directory I work on is littered with
temporary files, one-time throwaway scripts, and the like.  I don't
want to have to commit all these secondary these files to the
repository.

Any advice would be much appreciated.
