Checkout aborted error on checking out a binary file from cvs

Hello,

On checking out an ~6MB file (Wincvs client, Linux server), I get an error
saying "cvs [checkout aborted]: end of file from server (consult above
messages if any)".  There aren't any error messages to consult.  The
downloaded file seems to be the one that we want, so I can't figure out the
reason for the message.  Running a trace on the checkout command for this
file and another smaller binary file shows similar output except for the
last line.   The first fails and the second reports success.  I'd appreciate
any help figuring this out.
