Has anyone seen this error message?

A member of my team using TortoiseCVS on Windows XP just tried to check
out a branch of a module

    cvs co -r <branch> <module>

and got the following error message:

cvs [checkout aborted]: cannot rename file CVS/Entries.Extra.Backup to
CVS/Entries.Extra: Permission sdenied

I have never seen this message before, and don't know where to begin
looking for the problem.  Has anyone seen this before and figured it
out?
