On the Utility of Update -A

What purpose does the update –A switch serve other than to switch you back to the HEAD of trunk after creating a branch? With the exception of that narrow use case it seems to be dangerous and confusing. It also seems to be redundant as there is a more general way of switching branches and merging changes from the top of a branch. Not suggesting that’s all true but that’s the impression I have and would appreciate some clarification.

TIA
