The fix that was already applied to the trunk is atomic, fully functional on it's own.
It's later been decided that other, similar changes should be added and organizationally, it would make more sense for the original fix to be part of a branch instead of part of the trunk. Not 100% required per se, but when we look back at the source tree 3 years later it'll make it easier to figure out what was going on if the original "fix" is part of the branch.
