Careful with your terminology.
When you say server, do you mean what I think, are you talking about the cvs
executable and associated contrib. scripts?

Or do you just mean where all your ",v" and CVSROOT config files are, which
is usually called the repository?

If you mean executable, you should probably either use the version which
comes with your OS or install from scratch.

If you mean repository, see your notes above, it should work with the
executable that you build or comes with your os.
