I know what you mean.

One other approach you might consider is to have a script or makefile in
the base module, m, which checks out the other modules. The project can
be structured in such a way that the sub-modules are now independent of
the main module, so that if you tag the main module you don't get that
tag applied to the sub-module (e.g. an in-house library). I know tags
are cheap, but I've worked in a company which had hundreds of projects,
all sharing some libraries. Scanning through a list of thousands of tags
in these libraries for the one tag you want is not fun.
