read lock failed - giving up

Hi,
I get the following error upon a cvs status command:

cvs status: Examining .
cvs status: Examining intel
cvs status: failed to create lock directory for
`/usr/local/repository/colloborations/intel'
(/usr/local/repository/colloborations/intel/#cvs.lock): No such file or
directory
cvs status: failed to obtain dir lock in repository
`/usr/local/repository/colloborations/intel'
cvs [status aborted]: read lock failed - giving up
-----------

This is baffling to me because the other subdirectory under
colloborations directory works fine.

There are no #cvs.lock or any such files existing in the repository.

Any help will be appreciated.
