You probably want the latest version of 1.11 or 1.12 -- 1.11 is the
stable release, 1.12 is the experimental new features release.  Unless
there's some new feature in 1.12 that you really want, it's probably
best to stick with 1.11.

Assuming the file was unzipped during download (you can use the "file"
command on it to tell for sure), that is the actual CVS executable.  The
next step is to rename it "cvs", set the permissions to make it
executable (if necessary), and move it to a directory where you keep
executables that is on people's $PATH (like /usr/local/bin).

No need to apologize, there used to be README files in the binaries
directories that explained what to do, but they got lost when we
switched servers and no one has gotten around to recreating them.
