CVS was originally designed to run over the wide area networks available 20 
years ago.  You will find that you can just connect to the "new" server from 
the "old" company over a WAN/Internet and it will work fine.

This is not necessary and is complex to setup.  CVSNT 2.5.04 (GPL/Free, runs on 
Unix/Linux/Windows etc) has this inbuilt, or you can use things like cvsup - 
however it is unnecessary.  CVS is designed to be used over a WAN - just use it 
how it was designed to be used and it will work fine.  A single CVS sandbox can 
even contain directories from different repositories.
