Question on Locking Files

All,

We have multiple developers modifying an excel file in CVS.  Since it is a binary file, there is no easy way to merge changes if one user commits a change while another still has it checked out to make their own changes.  Is there anyway to lock the file while one user has it checked out to avoid having to merge modifications manually?

Any suggestions you may have on how to approach the problem will be greatly appreciated!
