I suspect this is true -- my experience has been that some of the
people for whom this is still working that I've asked to tell me what
./libtool --version returns tell me that they're actually still
running 1.4.

In any case, it would be nice to see a test added to a libtool "make
check" step for this problem (if that hasn't been done already) so
that we don't regress in the future.
