A quick summary:

After some off-list discussion about this, Thomas found out that this
issue was due to some older and/or buggy version of the LT_AC_PROG_SED
which was present in a package-local macro file, and not connected to
the libtool 1.5.22 version at all.

So, one issue down.  :-)
