Exactly. Did you compile GCC yourself but installed it in MSYS /bin?
I think that was the thing not to do, as it inhibits the automatic
path translation.  See
http://www.mingw.org/mingwfaq.shtml#faq-usingwithmsys for more info.

The gcc used comes from mingw.

I installed MinGW by Downloading the auto installer at http:// prdownloads.sourceforge.net/mingw/MinGW-5.0.3.exe?download:
Ran program and installed mingw and c++ support.

By default this places gcc in c:/mingw/bin .

I'm not using MSYS at all. I'm using MinGW for the compilers and cygwin for the shell and basic tools. In my path I have added / cygdrive/c/mingw/bin as the first item in my PATH.

If that wasn't the case, then I'd like more information, such as how and
where you installed GCC, its version, and '../libtool --version'.

gcc -v
Reading specs from c:/mingw/bin/../lib/gcc/mingw32/3.4.2/specs
Configured with: ../gcc/configure --with-gcc --with-gnu-ld --with-gnu- as --host=mingw32 --target=mingw32 --prefix=/mingw --enable-threads -- disable-nls --enable-languages=c,c++,f77,ada,objc,java --disable- win32-registry --disable-shared --enable-sjlj-exceptions --enable- libgcj --disable-java-awt --without-x --enable-java-gc=boehm -- disable-libgcj-debug --enable-interpreter --enable-hash- synchronization --enable-libstdcxx-debug
Thread model: win32
gcc version 3.4.2 (mingw-special)

For my compiles:

gettext-0.15/gettext-tools/libtool --version
ltmain.sh (GNU libtool) 1.5.22 (1.1220.2.365 2005/12/18 22:14:06)
