[I'm sending this message on behalf of David Mejias, which seems to have
some problems with the mailing list]

Dear all,

As many of you know, the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) is
already offering a master programme in free software (UOC-MPFS) which is
somewhat different from the proposal we've been discussing in this list,
which we refer to as MOLOS (Master on Libre and Open Source Software). A
few months ago, the Catalan government opened a call for proposals to
develop master and bachelor degrees adapted to the European Space for
Higher Education and we submitted a proposal for adapting our master
programme UOC-MPFS to the Bologna process. I am glad to announce that
our proposal has been accepted and a pilot course will be offered at the
UOC starting in November 2004.

The design the UOC has submitted to the Catalan government is a
mixture of the MOLOS and the UOC-MPFS programmes, since it was the only
way that we could meet the requested starting date (fall 2004). Because
of this, the programme actually approved by the Catalan government
presents some variations with respect to MOLOS. Because of this, let me
call it UOC-MOLOS.

Now let me summarise some of the guidelines of the UOC-MOLOS approved
proposal:

   - The UOC-MOLOS maintains the 30 + 30 + 30 ECTS structure. That is,
30 ECTS credits of core modules, 30 ECTS credits of
elective/specialization modules and 30 ECTS credits for a Master's
thesis.

   - The 30 ECTS core modules in the UOC-MOLOS programme are the
following:

      1. Introduction to free software (6 ECTS)
      2. Basic GNU/Linux operating system (6 ECTS)
      3. Advanced administration of GNU/Linux (6 ECTS)
      4. Legal aspects and exploitation of free software (6 ECTS)
      5. Case studies (6 ECTS)

   - The 30 ECTS elective/specialization modules must be chosen from the
following 8 courses (which can be extended with other elective
subjects):

      1. Utilites and tools(6 ECTS)
      2. Computer networks in free software environments(6 ECTS)
      3. Advanced networking: security issues (6 ECTS)
      4. Web development (6 ETCS)
      5. Database systems (6 ECTS)
      6. Introduction to software development in free software
environments (6 ECTS)
      7. Advanced issues in software development (6 ECTS)
      8. Free software engineering (6 ECTS)

The contents of these 13 courses coincide in a 70% with those of the
MOLOS proposal, and the 30% difference can be covered by other elective
modules, for example, another course on "Economy and business models"
can be added. Our intention is to make the UOC-MOLOS proposal converge
to the genuine MOLOS proposal in the future.

The main advantage of the UOC-MOLOS proposal is that we have already
developed didactic materials (in Spanish) for all these courses. By
"didactic materials" I don't mean a collection of slides or solved
problems, but full text books which are published under the GFDL
license. As a sample, you can download 5 of these books from the
following address:

   http://www.uoc.edu/masters/softwarelibre/esp/materiales.html

The 8 remaining books will be shortly available at the same address.

One of the requirements by the Catalan government is that the
submitting institution (the UOC) participates in the Erasmus Mundus
programme for the academic year 2005-2006. This means that we need at
least two other universities (partners) from two other European
countries to implement the UOC-MOLOS programme (or some slight variation
of it) in the academic year 2005-06. The good news is that we already
have the text books for the 13 courses (in Spanish) and they are
published with the GFDL license, so it won't be difficult to translate
these materials to English or some other language to fit your local
requirements (there are no legal difficulties due to the licensing
terms). I would be very grateful if you could join this project, which
can be thought of as an early implementation of the MOLOS programme.

If any of you are interested in taking part in the next call for
proposals of the Erasmus Mundus programme please contact me in order to
make all the necessary arrangements.

Thank you very much and best regards,

      David
