Hi Adrian.
The JP1 is the there to supply power from the autopilot to the receiver
as the ppm board takes it's power from the autopilot any way.
If you had connected a battery also to the receiver that is bad for the
health of the 5v regulator.
The autopilot's dc input is not coming from the receiver, the receiver
take power from the autopilot's 5v when the JP1 is installed, otherwise
you can power the receiver with a separate battery or bec if the JP1
jumper is removed.
You can use any switching bec like the Castle creations 10A bec or
similar with a little work.
In any case do not use the internal 5v regulator for driving servos.
