Here is an example of what you wanted to do.

The trick that makes it works is to "simply" add one indent space at the begining of each line.
<code> or <tt> tags are not even needed.

How do I insert code? I have tried to use the <tt> and the <code> but mediawiki still formats the code the way it likes. I have had a look at the examples you offered and they use the <tt> option.
