Session Description

The session will describe an ongoing research program whose purpose is to evaluate (a) the effect of the current and proposed Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) for the built-environment on the egress of individuals with disabilities during the mass pedestrian flows (MPFs) triggered by health-safety events, and (b) the effect of security-oriented design methods on the egress of individuals with disabilities during health-safety event triggered MPFs. The objective of the project is to measure the emergent behaviors of heterogeneous sample populations of five representative built-environments (an airport, high school, conference center, multi-story office building, and secured federal development) during simulated health-safety events. Agent-based simulations are used to measure these behaviors and their effect on individuals with disabilities.
